CREATING
A DEMO
Picking the Right Songs
by Brian O'Connor, PGE Entertainment
Picking
the right songs for your demo can literally make or break you. You
have thirty seconds....that's right, thirty seconds to catch the
listeners attention or your demo will join the rest tossed into
the trash can. That's just the way it is...but now there is a new
opportunity. The industry and the experts over at Platinum Groove
Entertainment are looking for raw new talent. That
means even if you don't have years of experience, a huge portfolio,
or a published CD in hand...you too have a chance to join the others
on the autograph tours. That's right, even if you have only sung
karaoke you now have a chance.
But
first...you have to get past the initial demo listening. What will
make yours stand out from the others? We asked Brian at Platinum
Groove Entertainment what he was looking for in a demo and these
are the tips he presented.
-
Your song has to catch the listener's attention immediately -
so hit them hard and fast, don't make them wait for the good stuff.
- The
hook needs to be strong.
- Song
lyrics should be simple and easy to catch on for the listener.
- Your
initial goal is to get and keep their attention for 30 seconds,
if you do...you've got another 30 seconds to convince them you
are something special.
- With
that in mind....don't send a million songs.
- If
you have a lot of material you want to send, break it up into
smaller segments and splice them together. Put this medley on
the first CD track using computer software...you can always include
the full tracks as well. If you have their attention that much...that
they choose to listen to the full track, you are in business!
